Casa Italiana Opera Company is the oldest-running small opera company in Los Angeles . It was founded 40 years ago by Mario Leonetti, formerly of the New York City Opera. It is now under the artistic direction of Janet DeMay, Juilliard School alumna and graduate of the Grove School of Music. Janet, a mezzo-soprano, made her Broadway debut with John Houseman's acting company at the age of 22, and has been seen in many film and television roles - most notably as Bernice Fox in NBC's “Remington Steele”. She is a session singer for film & studio recordings. Under Mario's tutelage she became the hand-picked choice to run the new Casa Italiana Opera Company, which is now a California non-profit.
Our goal is to blend the energy of new emerging talent with the seasoned skills of more mature singers, bringing opera to Los Angeles that has vitality, professionalism and musical excellence.
Our new resident conductor is Joel Lish - violist, conductor, teacher, and arranger. Mr. Lish received his Master's degree from the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music where he studied viola performance and conducting. He is the founder and Music Director of the Palisades Symphony, which has presented seven concerts every season for over forty years. Mr. Lish was the chair of the Music Department at Pacific Palisades High School for thirty years. As chair he has fostered the careers of many of today's prominent professional musicians. Currently he is a sought after session player for major recording companies in Los Angeles.
